Lesson #1: The importance of Mindset

To begin the first lesson at Mack Performance University, I want to discuss how important having the right mindset is in order to maximize your progress and achieve results and how to preserve when things get tough.

Our mindset has a hugely profound effect on our abilities to learn new skills and building new and sustainable habits among other aspects.

In short, It’s about having a growth mindset over a fixed mindset.

Individuals with a fixed mindset believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence, talents, habits, bodyweight, etc. are simply fixed traits. They believe that talent alone creates success - without putting in the effort. They spend their time bitching about why things don’t work out for them instead of spending the necessary time to develop their skills and themselves. They spend far too much time making excuses and rationale their failures.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are those with the Growth Mindset.

These individuals believe they can become smarter and better if they put in the work. That their current talent and smarts are just the starting point and that they can change their current circumstances. "failure" is only temporary and it's something they can learn from.

Why am I telling you this? Because growth requires effort.

It all starts with a growth mindset. It requires you to challenge yourself to see "failure" as a part of the process. It requires you to do things you've never done before to achieve results you never thought you could. This will feel awkwards and strange at times.

What matters is that we make the conscious decision to take daily action towards becoming the best version of ourselves.

In order to become the best version of ourselves, we need to clearly define your "Why"

Each person starts their health and fitness journey for their own reasons, however the root of most people's motivation is often a deep, emotional reason. To help you clearly identify your motivation to have a successful transformation, I want you to use the 5 "why's" method.

Here's an example:

Why do I want to lose weight?

"I want to be healthy."

Why do I want to be healthy?

"I don't want to develop diabetes like my father.”

Why don’t you want to develop diabetes? "

I saw how much stress it caused me and my family, and I don’t want to go through the same struggle.”

Why don’t you want to go through the same struggle?

"I want to see my grandkids grow old. I want to travel the world free of sickness and pain."

Once you identify your root reason(s) or why for starting your fitness journey, staying consistent will become sooooo much easier because you are driven to better YOURSELF!

You'll be MORE motivated to workout, and follow your nutritional program since you are doing this for yourself, not for others.

It’s this type of mindset that separates those who accomplish their goals and those who believe they are predestined to fail.

“We like to think of our champions and idols as superheroes who were born different from us. We don’t like to think of them as relatively ordinary people who made themselves extraordinary.”

Carol Dweck
